Joe's Stone Crabs, Miami Beach

Miami is known for its beaches but has some fabulous dining as well! One of the most well known and a must when you come to Miami is Joe’s Stone Crab, the first eating house on Miami Beach which was opened by Joe & Jennie Weiss in 1913 and is still family owned. If it is your first visit you must have their specialty the fresh cold Stone Crab Claws with the classic Mustard Sauce. Make sure you get either the Jumbo or Large Claws as they are less work and give you more crab! They were just as delicious as we expected! When it comes to dessert there is no real choice but their award winning excellent Key Lime Pie. It is baked fresh daily and was light and perfect!

The Forge in Miami Beach is another must when you are in Miami. It is “The Place to See and be Seen.” Chef Andrew Marc Rothschild just received a Five Star Rating for Steakhouses and after dining there we concur! The Appetizers that we enjoyed included Belgian Oven-Roasted Herb Infused Escargot which are infused with California Herbs and Chardonnay and quick roasted in garlic butter. Your Entree of choice must include the fantastic Aged Steaks, which we highly recommend. The Oak grilled Filet Mignon is extra thick prime tenderloin and is flash marinated and grilled over aromatic Oakwood. The Classic Java Style Sirloin is crusted with hand ground peppercorns and eastern orient spices and Oakwood grilled in a spicy Java sauce. The Dessert to try is The Forge Blacksmith Pie, a classic for over 20 years, which is a decadent luscious Chocolate Chip Crust, thick layers of Swiss dark chocolate ganache, fresh vanilla custard, and homemade whipped cream with chocolate shavings. The highlight of the evening was the tour led by Sommelier Jean Valentin through The Forge’s world famous Wine Cellar which is worth over $5 million. We saw bottles from the late 1700’s and some worth $100,000. We just happened to be there when all the beautiful people were on hand for Ocean Drive Magazine’s 11th Anniversary Party. We recognized some celebrities including Derek Jeter and it looked like Paris Hilton was at the bar as well.

Outdoor dining is one of the treats you can enjoy with the great weather that Miami has to offer and Ocean Drive is the perfect setting. We had heard that the cuisine created by Executive Chef Joe Monteiro at A Fish Called Avalon in South Beach had been getting some rave reviews and decided to try it. We were warmly greeted by Joe and escorted to a table overlooking Ocean Drive, which was exactly what we were looking for. A glass of wine and a small salad were soon at our table and we were relaxed and happy. The highlight of the meal was a mouth watering terrific entrée Grilled Halibut Steak in Passion-fruit Ginger Sauce. Dessert is a treat as they also make a terrific Key Lime Pie. A Fish called Avalon is worthy destination when you are in Miami.
