Moose’s-
As San Francisco As It Gets;
Great Food and a Good Time

The Dining Detectives were in The City and on our way to North Beach to a true San Franciscan spot, Moose’s. The restaurant is easy to spot with a great Neon Blue Sign proudly displaying Moose’s. The restaurant opened six years ago and is owned by Ed and Mary Etta Moose. You could tell by the buzz from the full dining room that this was a place to "see and be seen". Ed is a veteran of the San Francisco Dining Scene and the Washington Square Bar and Grill, the haunt of the of the late famous Herb Caen. Almost any night you might find local and visiting celebrities drinking and dining truly enjoying the ambience of Moose’s

We were warmly greeted and escorted to our table by Thao Beck , the General Manager. Antonio, our waiter started us out with a round of San Pelligrino Sparkling Water and we were about to see what Moose’s was all about. Antonio lead us through our dining experience this evening with a perfect sense of timing accompanied by a delightful sense of humor! Jason Miller, the Executive Chef, stopped by introduced himself and told us about the Daily Menu which features the freshest of seasonal dishes in the California Cuisine/ Italian Mediterranean style. We enjoyed meeting Jason who was obviously so pleased to be at Moose’s. Everyone we spoke to said they were there because of Ed Moose…..who is a fantastic person!

Appetizers & Salads & Soups:

Crisp Maine Crab Cake, Gravenstein Apple Salad, Meyer Lemon Aioli-This spicy starter was scrumptious, a perfect way to start a meal.

Wood Oven Roasted Dungeness Crab, Spicy Broth, Grilled Levain- this is a super dish that would have been plenty as an Entrée

Grilled Pear and Butter Lettuce Salad, Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing, Crisp Pancetta- Great Dressing helped make this an excellent offering. The greens are fresh from County Line Harvest in Petaluma.

Cream of Parsnip Soup, Apple Relish- Great soup, flavorful, fluffy, great texture subtle and distinctive taste.

Small Plates:

Roasted Beets, Pecorino- This excellent dish was accented by red wine vinaigrette dressing and was a true treat.

Baked Feta, Sun- dried Tomatoes, Cumin Flatbread. Even calorie counters should at least taste the homemade Flatbread and flavorful Feta.It was great.

Entrees

Braised Veal Shank, Sour Cream Mashed Potatoes, Roasted Chanterelles and Sweet Onions. -
This hearty fall meal melts in your mouth and the taste of sweet onions was incredible.

Pan Seared Day Boat Scallops, Maine Lobster Risotto, Blood Orange reduction. The Largest, Juiciest Scallops we have ever seen and a terrific sauce.

Housemade Gnocchi, Shaved Alba White Truffle, Creamy Leeks. This is a very rich and special dish that will please true Gnocchi lovers.

Mooseburger- We didn’t try one but a happy diner to our left looked quite pleased as she found her Mooseburger to be perfectly cooked (medium rare) and tasty. We will try one ourselves soon.

Desserts:

Bittersweet Chocolate Bread Pudding-
Candied Walnut Ice Cream, Grand Marnier Chocolate Sauce. This was fantastic- be sure to save room for this decadent dessert.

Meyer Lemon Tart, Whipped Crème Fraiche. Great presentation and a tart tart.

Rum Raisin Ice Cream Sundae-
Caramel Bananas, Orange Pound Cake. - Just Perfect

Wines:

Moose’s has a nice selection of wines by the glass, half and full bottles.
We opted to start with some wines by the glass and then had a few half bottles with the Entrees.

Geyser Peak ,Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County 1999. This is one of our favorite light white wines. We have been to the Winery many times and were happy to see this tasty Northern California favorite on the list. Paired perfectly with the Grilled Pear Salad.

Groth Chardonnay, Napa Valley 1999. Another great choice, full bodied and bursts on your palate. Paired well with the Pan Seared Scallops.

Hyde Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc, Selene, Carneros 1999. This light flavorful white wine paired well with the Gnocchi.

Von Strasser, Cabernet Sauvignon, Diamond Mountain, Napa Valley 1997. Full Bodied, Paired well with the Veal Shank.

Opus One, Napa Valley 1995- This Is a great wine that we have tasted a number of times at the winery and were glad to see on the menu.

Moose’s has a true San Francisco feeling. We were pleased to see Ed Moose chatting with old friends and new alike. Ed stopped by and mentioned how glad he was that we had chosen to dine at his restaurant. He remarked that he had an affinity for the newspaper business having been with The Associated Press and had read The Petaluma Post enjoying the light and bright articles.
Moose’s is a great place. The pictures of past and present San Francisco Celebrities, such as Herb Caen and Willie Brown, the excellent Cuisine, the crisp and friendly service, the lively Jazz trio, the packed elegant bar are all about and what should be expected from a restaurant in the greatest city in the world. San Franciscans demand and Moose’s delivers!
