Caffe Giostra
Fine Italian Cuisine
In Petaluma

It was Saturday night and we were on the northside of Petaluma. We had heard wonderful things about Caffe Giostra from our friends and were about to venture in. It was quite inviting to see tables with large umbrellas and chairs in front of this cute little bistro and the interior was equally charming.

We were warmly greeted by our host owner Francesco Sannella and seated in the middle of this cozy intimate restaurant where we were able to see the open kitchen. The smells from the kitchen were truly incredible and certainly whetted our appetites. We were smiling because we knew that we were in for a real "treat" tonight! We started off the evening by ordering wine from Carlo our very personable waiter and were about to see what Caffee Giostra had to offer. Here are some dishes that we highly recommend.

Insalade, Zuppa e Antipasti:

Bruschetta Rustica- Toasted Garlic Bread, Pesto, Mozzarella, Tomato, Basil- An excellent starter.
Carpaccio- Thinly sliced Raw beef, Olive Oil, Parmesan, Capers, Mustard- Very tasty and fresh.
Insalata Romana- Hearts of Romaine, Pine Nuts, Sun-Dried Tomato, Blue Cheese- Refreshing and light, the pine nuts truly added.
Zuppa Del Giorno- Butternut Squash Soup- Rich taste but not too sweet.

Ravioli Di Casa- made fresh on site daily these large Ravioli were a little bit of heaven!
Black Pasta with Salmon- we were intrigued at the thought of black pasta infused with squid ink (Actually a favorite from Venice) and found it to be quite a treat. Cheese and fresh tomatoes enhanced the flavor.

Piatti Principali:

Gamberi " Scampi Style"- Large Prawns, Garlic, Butter, White Wine, Touch of Cream. We loved this entrée which was served right from the pan and was terrific.

Vitello Giostra- Veal Slices Sautéed With Artichokes & Mushrooms. A Veal Lover’s Delight.

Tiramisu- Light and delicious.
Ice Cream drowned in Espresso. Great!

1997 Zellerbach Estates, Cabernet Sauvignon. Paired well with the Black Pasta.
1998 Lorimier, Estate Bottled Sauvignon Blanc. Paired well with the Veal.
1998 Buehler Vineyards, Russian River Valley Chardonnay. Paired well with the salad.
1998 Archidamo-Pervini, King of Sparta- Manduria, Italia. - Great Italian Red Wine paired well with everything. Order a full bottle if you enjoy a big red.

Caffee Giostra has combined great Italian food with gracious service. You can see the love they put into their food and serving their customers. Francesco and his partner Eddie have owned and run restaurants for many years in Italy and here including two old favorite of ours; La Trattoria in San Rafael and Bacci in Mill Valley. We had such a good time we returned the next day for lunch and were equally impressed. For the great tastes of Italy, Caffee Giostra is the destination. We loved the Italian cuisine and now see why Caffee Giostra is the Talk of the Town of Petaluma. We’ll be back again soon!
