Sophistication in the heart of Marin
Savanna Grill is back! Many of you probably remember the great restaurant that opened in Corte Madera in the mid 80's. Well, the Savanna Grill returned in May of this year with the original owner, Keith Jones. You will find the same great atmosphere and ambiance that was the signature of the restaurant in earlier years. It is one of the few restaurants in Marin that gives you a true San Francisco City feeling
Before they knew that we would be writing a review, we snooped our way into the bar. We enjoyed a tasty glass of Niebaum Coppola '97 Merlot while chatting with the bartender, George. He was pleased to be back at the restaurant where he had worked for many years and it showed.
It was now time to dine and we were escorted to our table which was elevated overlooking the open kitchen where the chefs worked their magic. As true dinning detectives, we tried a number of dishes on the menu and these are our recommendations.
Seared Ahi Tuna with Mixed Greens House-made Remoulade, and Salsa Fresca. The ahi was so fresh it melted in your mouth and the house-made remoulade added just the right amount of flavor to accent the subtle taste of the ahi. Our favorite, pickled ginger to cleanse the pallet accompanied it. This isa popular appetizer but this was the best we have tasted!
GRILLED prawns with Red Curry Peanut Sauce And Papaya Salsa The Prawns were lightly seared and very tasty, however we felt that the sauce was not spicy enough for our taste. We still recommend this, as not everyone likes his or her food hot.
Marinated Skirt Steak with wild rice and vegetables This has long been a favorite at Savanna Grill. It proved to be superb again. We ordered it medium-rare and it was cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful.
Center-Cut Pork Chops with Mash Potatoes, Braised Cabbage, and Stone
Ground Mustard Jus. This is a hearty meal! The large juicy chops fill the plate accompanied by tasty mashed potatoes and the entrée was further enhanced by the stone ground mustard jus. If you are really hungry, you can't miss with this selection.
BBQ Baby Back Ribs with Oven-browned Potatoes and Savanna Slaw This fantastic entree is one that frankly we had before and we can only speak from experience. However as we snooped around this night we could see some happy rib eaters to confirm our past impressions.
Dessert lovers have many sweet choices ranging from Granny Smith Apple
Cobbler to Ghirardelli Ganache Torte to our personal favorite.Crème Brulee. The Crème Brulee was prepared to perfection from presentation to
pallet. Be smart and save room for the Crème Brulee-You will be glad you did.
It is rare to see a wine list as extensive as Savanna Grill's. The wine buyer has hit the mark with the best in every category. Other restaurants may offer a sampling of the best names of Napa/Sonoma but here you find the preferred vintages as well.
Some of our personal favorites were on the list
Grgich Hills '95 Cabernet Sauvignon ,Cakebread Chardonnay '97 and Markham'97 Merlot (Hi Clint)·
Our waiter enhanced our dinning experience at the Savanna Grill. Oscar was simply terrific. He remembered everyone's order without writing it down and each meal came out as requested. He kept the dining experience light and fun which made it very enjoyable.
We encourage you to enjoy the atmosphere and food of Savanna Grill soon!
The food is top notch and the prices are reasonable.
